Since June 2002 you can download the rules as a pdf-file from the Games Workshop website. Nevertheless you need to buy the boxed game because only here you get the board, special dices, templates and 2 teams for the game. You can order the box from the GW Mail Order per phone or website. Or you have a local dealer like Fantasy Strongpoint in Stuttgart-Boeblingen.
In comparison with normal card boards like Monopoly Bloodbowl is very complex. To learn the game you need somebody who gives you an introduction. After that we needed approximatly 5 (!) games until we could play without calling the commissioner (Thanks Wolfgang for Your patience!). At the beginning we needed 4-6 hours for one match, today the games ends after 2-3 hours.
If you now say ok this is my game, you can choose your preferred team-race from more than 15 different official teams. A wide range is available, teams with a high agility (elves), teams with strength (dwarfs) or the middle (Humans).
Here is a list of some official teams:

The next step is to paint your team. Sure you can play with unpainted figures, but it makes more fun with well painted minis. It’s a good idea to learn painting at a workshop by your local dealer or a Games Wokshop Store in your town.
